Infection prevention and control in care homes

CQC has proposed a new Audit Tool that uses a set of questions and prompts to look at how well staff and people living in care homes are protected by infection prevention and control (IPC).

These questions help to gather information about the service’s strength and help understand if there are any gaps or concerns about infection prevention and control. They also help us prepare for the risk of a second wave and the impact of winter pressures.

It includes CQC requirements along with the solutions and possible evidence to achieve a good rating. It includes social distancing shielding among staff, prevention from catching and spreading infection by visitors, guidance to admission of people to care homes from a health or social care service, PPE kits etc.

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. If we do not lay out ourselves in the service of mankind, whom should we serve?
